received his B.A. in biology and chemistry from San Jose State University in California. He completed his medical degree in Maine at the University Of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He trained at the Hunterdon Medical Center Family Practice Residency Program in Flemington, NJ where he served one year as chief resident before becoming board certified in family practice. Dr. Butler has been the Medical Director of Dartmouth Medical Center since 2000. His interests are in sports medicine, developing patient education strategies, and health care maintenance. He is co-founder of three health related websites; MyPhotoDiet.com, FraternityMed.com and SororityMed.com.
Dr. Butler was raised in Vermont and spent his early adult life traveling and living in Europe and North Africa with a home base in Sun Valley, Idaho. He spent two years as a kibbutz volunteer in northern Israel in the early 1980s. Dr. Butler has raced several marathons, participated in multiday cycling events, has made a dozen sport parachute jumps, and in 2003 completed the Ironman® triathlon in Lake Placid, New York. He still races occasionally but prefers to spend all of his free time with his wife and twin daughters. Dr. Butler is married to Debra Curtis, Ph.D., a professor of cultural anthropology at Salve Regina University.
